Dive weighting calculator
A starting point for how much lead to wear. Always confirm it with a buoyancy check in the water.
Metric units: m, bar, L, kg.
Result
- Start with
- 6 kg
- For the suit
- +6 kg
The form starts on example values.
Check it before you rely on it: at the surface with an empty BCD and a normal breath held, you should float at eye level and sink slowly as you breathe out. At the end of the dive, with little gas left, you should be able to hold a stop at 5 m without effort. Adjust 1 kg at a time.
How it works
There is no single right formula. This uses common rules of thumb: a share of your body weight that depends on your exposure suit, adjusted for fresh water, which lifts less than sea water, and for a steel cylinder, which stays heavy when empty, unlike a light alloy one that turns buoyant.
Your build, your own kit and the way you breathe all change the answer, so treat the number as where to start, not where to finish.
